Like a Dragon Series to Omit Karaoke in Live-Action Adaptation

by Elijah Feb 14,2025

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the Yakuza series, Like a Dragon, will notably omit the beloved karaoke minigame, a staple of the franchise since Yakuza 3 (2009). Executive producer Erik Barmack explained in a recent discussion that adapting the game's extensive 20+ hour content, including side activities, into a six-episode series necessitated difficult choices. While karaoke is absent from the initial season, Barmack hinted at its potential inclusion in future installments, especially given lead actor Ryoma Takeuchi's fondness for karaoke.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions. While fans remain hopeful, concerns exist that a solely serious tone might overshadow the franchise's signature comedic elements and quirky side stories. The success of faithful adaptations like Prime Video's Fallout (65 million viewers in two weeks) contrasts sharply with the criticism leveled at Netflix's Resident Evil (2022) for its significant departure from the source material.

RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama, in a July 26th SDCC interview, described the series as a "bold adaptation," aiming for a fresh experience rather than a simple recreation. He assured fans that the show will retain elements to keep viewers entertained, hinting at the preservation of some quirky charm, though specifics remain undisclosed.

The omission of karaoke, while potentially disappointing to some, may be a strategic choice to prioritize the main narrative within the limited episode count. The success of this first season could pave the way for future seasons with expanded storylines and, perhaps, the iconic "Baka Mitai" performance.
