Disney's Snow White Remake Faces Uphill Battle After Soft Box Office Debut

by Carter Apr 03,2026

Disney's Snow White remake stumbled at the box office during its opening weekend, posting one of the weakest domestic totals among the studio's live-action adaptations.

According to Comscore, the Marc Webb-directed Snow White, known for The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, earned $43 million domestically, securing the second-largest opening of 2025, trailing only Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping the weekend chart, it fell short of the $45 million debut of 2019’s live-action Dumbo and missed projections.

For comparison, Disney’s 2019 The Lion King, 2017 Beauty and the Beast, 2016 The Jungle Book, and 2023 The Little Mermaid each surpassed $100 million domestically in their opening weekends.

Internationally, Snow White’s debut was equally lackluster, grossing $44.3 million, resulting in a global total of $87.3 million, per Comscore estimates.

Snow White, a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 1937 animated classic, stars Rachel Zegler in the lead role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, the film’s modest opening suggests a challenging path to profitability, especially factoring in marketing expenses.

Yet, there’s hope for a turnaround. Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to The Lion King remake, debuted to a modest $35.4 million domestically in December but ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide.

Disney is banking on a similar slow-burn success for Snow White, even as questions linger about the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has earned $400.8 million globally ($192.1 million domestic, $208.7 million international) after six weeks.

IGN’s review of Snow White gave it a 7/10, noting: “Disney’s live-action Snow White delivers a thoughtful adaptation of the original, avoiding a mere imitation.”
