Detailed Guide to Bow and Arrows in Minecraft
Minecraft's cubic world, while captivating, is rife with danger: neutral mobs, monsters, and—in certain game modes—other players. For survival, crafting shields and weapons is essential. This guide focuses on creating bows and arrows in Minecraft; sword crafting is covered elsewhere. A bow without arrows is purely decorative.

What is a Bow in Minecraft?

A Minecraft bow is a ranged weapon, offering a degree of safety when attacking enemies. However, this advantage isn't universal; the Warden, for instance, possesses ranged attacks requiring strategic combat. Skeletons, Strays, and Illusioners also wield bows, with Skeletons posing a significant early-game threat.

How to Make a Bow in Minecraft
Crafting a bow requires:
- 3 Strings
- 3 Sticks
Combine these at a crafting table as shown below:

Alternatively, two damaged bows can be repaired at a crafting table. The resulting bow's durability equals the sum of the damaged bows plus a 5% bonus.
Getting a Bow from a Villager
Apprentice-level Fletchers sell regular bows for 2 emeralds. Expert-level Fletchers offer enchanted bows, costing 7-21 emeralds.
Getting a Bow as a Trophy

Defeating Skeletons or Strays has a chance (8.5%, increased to 11.5% with the "Looting" enchantment) of yielding a bow.
Bow as a Crafting Ingredient
Bows are also used in crafting Dispensers. Required materials:
- 1 Bow
- 7 Cobblestones
- 1 Redstone Dust

Arrows in Minecraft
To craft arrows:
- 1 Flint
- 1 Stick
- 1 Feather

This yields 4 arrows. Skeletons and Strays also drop arrows (1-2), though those dropped by mobs are uncollectable. Fletchers sell arrows (16 for 1 emerald), sometimes with enchantments. In Java Edition, "Hero of the Village" status may reward arrows. Chests in Jungle Temples and Bastion Remnants may also contain arrows. Arrows stuck in blocks are collectable, except those fired by Skeletons, Illusioners, or bows with "Infinity" enchantment. In Creative mode, arrows disappear upon impact.

Using a Bow in Minecraft
Equip the bow; arrows need only be in your inventory. Draw the bowstring (right-click) and release to fire. Draw time affects damage (1 second = 6 damage, longer = up to 11 damage). Maximum range (approx. 120 blocks) is achieved with a full draw at a 45-degree angle. Arrows travel slower and shorter distances underwater and in lava. Potions can enhance arrows:
- 8 Arrows
- Any Lingering Potion

This creates tipped arrows applying potion effects (⅛ the potion's duration). Even with "Infinity," tipped arrow ammo is limited. Java Edition also features Spectral Arrows (crafted with a regular arrow and 4 Glowstone Dust), illuminating impact areas.

Ensure your bow has full durability and sufficient arrows before venturing into the Minecraft world for optimal hunting, material gathering, and self-defense.
