Rompopolo, a Brute Wyvern, makes its first appearance in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll encounter it in the Oilwell Basin region while on your way to Azuz City. Defeating Rompopolo is essential to progress further in the game.
Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage in battle with it multiple times by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by initiating the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for your battle against Rompopolo, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a Defense Charm I to bolster your defenses. Before the fight, don't forget to grill a meal to enhance your health and stamina.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a set of distinctive attacks. Its body features saggy skin that inflates with gas, which it uses for various gas-related attacks, including explosions. Be cautious as it can also inflict poison status ailments, so carry Antidotes. Your Palico can help cleanse these ailments, but it's not always reliable.
Key attacks to watch out for include:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will swipe forward twice with its clawed arms. This attack has limited range and is easy to dodge.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward, raising its arms to perform an arcing swipe attack.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail toward its target, another physical attack to be wary of.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – It can spray a stream of poison gas or charge while swinging its head and spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge these to avoid damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo curls its tail and pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this as it inflicts significant damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

At the end of the battle, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo, similar to previous *Monster Hunter* games. To capture it, weaken the monster until your Palico indicates it looks "tired." Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.
Both capturing and killing Rompopolo yield viable rewards, with the main difference being the specific items you receive. While the exact item differences are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
