by Stella Apr 10,2025

In the ever-evolving landscape of Stephen King adaptations, a fresh take on the chilling tale of "Cujo" is set to thrill audiences once again. Netflix has announced its plans to produce a new film version of King's 1981 novel, with Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee on board as a producer. While the project is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members announced, the anticipation is already building.

Originally published in 1981, "Cujo" quickly became a cult classic when adapted into a film in 1983 by screenwriters Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, and directed by Lewis Teague. The story centers on a courageous mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace in the original film, who faces unimaginable terror as she tries to protect her young son from a once-friendly dog turned deadly by rabies. After being bitten by a rabid bat, Cujo transforms into a relentless predator, trapping the mother and son in their car with a broken engine, battling not only the beast but also the looming threat of heatstroke.

"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned from page to screen, and recent years have seen a notable resurgence in King adaptations. Earlier this year, Oz Perkins released his adaptation of King's short story "The Monkey." Additionally, fans can look forward to Glen Powell starring in a new version of "The Running Man" and JT Mollner's take on "The Long Walk," both slated for release this year and produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo Entertainment. The "IT" prequel series, "Welcome to Derry," is also in the works at HBO, while the iconic "Carrie" is being reimagined as an eight-episode series for Prime Video, helmed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

For Stephen King enthusiasts, the feast of new adaptations continues to grow, promising more thrilling and terrifying experiences on the horizon.
