"Captain America: Brave New World Hits $300M Worldwide Despite 68% Domestic Decline"

by Jason Apr 12,2025

"Captain America: Brave New World" is on track to hit the $300 million mark at the global box office, yet it faces challenges in reaching its break-even point of $425 million due to a steep 68% drop in domestic earnings during its second weekend. The film, led by Anthony Mackie, initially exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic haul over the Presidents Day weekend. However, its second weekend brought in only $28.2 million domestically, mirroring the performance of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" from 2023, which also struggled to break even.

According to Comscore, "Captain America: Brave New World" has now amassed $289.4 million worldwide, with $141.2 million from the domestic market and $148.2 million from international territories after just two weekends. The movie earned $63.5 million globally during its second weekend. Despite being the biggest release of 2025 so far, the film's significant second-weekend drop has raised concerns, especially given the absence of competing blockbusters in the immediate future. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at Comscore, commented to Variety, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. There’s still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you’d expect from Marvel."

Deadline predicts that "Captain America: Brave New World" will ultimately gross around $450 million globally. The film's launch was met with lukewarm reviews, including a 5/10 rating from IGN, which noted, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, falling short of strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."

Marvel Studios and Disney are banking on "Captain America: Brave New World" to regain momentum and reverse a recent downward trend for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, aside from the success of last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine." The film's performance is crucial as it sets the stage for upcoming releases like "Thunderbolts*" in May and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" in July.
