Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Reportedly In the Works With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning

Hulu may be bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back from the dead. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.

Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel.

Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's reprisal.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a canonical comic book series and the spin-off, Angel.
