Beat and Capture Chatacabra: Monster Hunter Wilds Guide

by Logan May 27,2025

If you're diving into *Monster Hunter Wilds* and aiming to master the art of taking down the Chatacabra, you're in the right place. This long-tongued menace is one of the first monsters you'll encounter, making it essential to learn how to effectively beat or capture it to enhance your hunting skills.

How to Beat Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Chatacabra, a formidable frog-like monster, primarily employs close-range attacks, leveraging its tongue and occasional rushes. While it's considered one of the easier monsters to confront, its smaller stature makes weapons like the Bow and Charge Blade slightly less efficient due to their multi-hit nature being more suited to larger targets. However, any weapon can still be effective against it.

Key to defeating the Chatacabra is understanding its attack patterns. It frequently uses its tongue for attacks, posing the greatest threat when you're positioned in front of it. It also performs a ground slam with its front limbs, which is always preceded by rearing up, giving you a clear signal to dodge or block. The only other notable attack to watch out for is when it raises its head and sweeps its tongue behind it, which you'll need to avoid if not facing it head-on.

The most effective strategy to take down this monster is to position yourself near its sides, staying vigilant for the rearing up that signals an incoming slam. Utilizing its weaknesses to Ice and Thunder will expedite the battle, allowing you to claim victory and perhaps even sport a new frog skin hat.

How to Capture Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capturing the Chatacabra in *Monster Hunter Wilds* follows the standard procedure for capturing monsters, with the added advantage that it can't fly. To prepare, bring along a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap and at least two Tranq Bombs. It's wise to carry one of each trap and a full set of eight Tranq Bombs to cover any unforeseen challenges.

Engage the Chatacabra in combat until its icon on the mini-map displays a small skull, indicating it's weakened and about to limp to a new area for the last time. At this point, follow it to its chosen retreat spot, set down a trap, and lure the Chatacabra into it. Once trapped, use two Tranq Bombs to sedate it, completing the capture process efficiently.
