6 ImagesThese five cards form what's known as a "cycle," each sharing a common design theme across Magic's five colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures, each linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans and featuring an ability that converts mana into a color from that clan.

“Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing across all rarities,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “Our goal was to ensure that many decks could access mana fixing easily. These creatures not only help you develop your mana but also allow you to play to the board simultaneously, unlike other designs such as tapped lands, which can put you at a disadvantage while fixing your mana.”

Recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. "The core concept for Tarkir was set well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in shaping our return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to do justice to this beloved plane from the very beginning, striving to craft an authentic and meaningful next chapter."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set slated for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
