A Fresh Look at Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA and DS Gems

This time, we're exploring the often-overlooked retro game selection on the Nintendo Switch, focusing specifically on Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS titles. Surprisingly, the Switch doesn't boast as many direct ports of these classics as other consoles. So, instead of separating them, we're presenting a combined list of ten fantastic titles available on the Switch eShop – four GBA and six DS games. No particular order here, let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up Steel Empire. While the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a special place for many, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. It's a fun comparison piece and offers a potentially more accessible experience. A great choice even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series on home consoles began to lose its footing, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, while initially a bit rough around the edges, launched a truly excellent series. Start here and experience the evolution of the gameplay across the titles.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

Yes, another Mega Man entry! But Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay experiences. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The clever virtual world concept is well-executed, providing hours of engaging gameplay.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it rivals even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The addictive soul-collecting system and enjoyable gameplay make the grinding worthwhile. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, initially a DSiWare release, catapulted the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. This game, with its origins partially rooted in an unreleased GBA title, solidified Shantae's place in gaming history.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

While originally a GBA title (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney is a must-play. These adventure games blend investigation and courtroom drama with witty humor and compelling narratives. The first game is a fantastic entry point.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creators of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick is a brilliantly written puzzle-adventure. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others and uncover the truth about your own death. A truly unique and captivating experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, The World Ends With You is best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version is a worthy alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls over the original's touch controls. However, all three are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS, this Switch port is a solid adaptation. Each game in the series is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.

This list provides a great starting point for exploring the GBA and DS libraries on the Switch. What are your favorite retro titles on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
