Ōkami 2: Confirmed Sequel in Early Development

by Finn Feb 23,2025

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, was announced at The Game Awards, sparking widespread excitement among fans. While details remain scarce, recent interviews shed some light on the project.

IGN confirmed with Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi that the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. When questioned about the identity of the godlike figure in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it to be Amaterasu.

PlayWhile not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied fan reception, stating that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.

Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel. Without revealing spoilers, the game concludes with Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and adventures.

However, further information will be limited for the foreseeable future. The development team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that substantial updates are not expected anytime soon.
